TM R&D wins prestigious MSC Malaysia APICTA 2018 for the innovation of Smart Safety Helmet
Places TM R&D as the Champion of Research & Development in 2018
TM Research & Development (TM R&D), the research arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) recently won the Cross Category: Research & Development for its innovative Smart Safety Helmet during the 19th MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) 2018 organised by the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM). Winning this prestigious award places TM R&D as the champion of Research & Development in 2018. In addition, TM R&D has been selected to represent Malaysia in the Cross Category: Research & Development at the International APICTA Awards 2018 in Guangzhou, China.
Present to accept the award was Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D.
Developed by TM R&D, Smart Safety Helmet is a data driven smart industrial or safety helmet, an Internet of Things (IoT) solution that provides live, wireless monitoring and array of sensors including accident impact and geolocation which can be used to perform various analysis towards creating a safer worksite. It sends telemetry to the cloud and processes the data for the benefit of the employer as well as the staff. It has all the safety helmet features, location tracking services, attendance, violation detection and a video camera for remote coaching and emergency observation of the workforce. This Smart Safety Helmet innovation is the first Smart Safety Helmet in Malaysia and it is now ready to be deployed for industry players across various sectors such as Oil & Gas, Construction, Chemical & Manufacturing Industry and many more.
Commenting on the milestone achievement, Datuk Bazlan Osman, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of TM said, “We are excited and thrilled to know that TM R&D has won the award. It was such a great honour and it is the first of many other innovations that will be introduced by our R&D arm. We are certainly proud of this recognition and TM R&D’s outstanding achievement in the ICT industry.”

The invention of this smart helmet without doubt will increase operational efficiency at the work place and enhance productivity level of the workforce.”
The Smart Safety Helmet started off as a challenge in speed and innovation, where the team worked towards creating a first working prototype within two (2) weeks. It later became part of one of the five (5) pillars of smart solutions under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between TM and Petronas to increase operational excellence and enhance customer experience. Gaining huge interests from large corporations, the Smart Safety Helmet was invited to be featured at the recent 4th Malaysia Oil & Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC) as part of TM’s product showcase.
MSC Malaysia APICTA provides recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals, students, entrepreneurs, SMEs and organisations with operations in Malaysia who have contributed to the development of the MSC Malaysia initiatives or in building applications and services for the benefit of Malaysia. TM R&D Celebrates double win at the global TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020
In-house solutions SWIMS and IDEAS+ received global recognition for the Beyond Connectivity and A.I, Data & Analytics categories respectively Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), added another feather to its cap when they recently bagged not one, but two (2) awards at the prestigious TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020. The awards were conferred to TM R&D for its innovative solutions namely Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) under the Beyond Connectivity and Artificial Intelligence (A.I) category, while its Intelligent Network Diagnostic & Expert Advisory System for Service Desk (IDEAS+) solution received the recognition under Data & Analytics category. Since 2007, TM Forum Excellence Awards recognises the world's leading companies for their innovative achievements spanning digital transformation, business and IT agility, customer centricity, cultural transformation, cross-industry partnering and collaboration, and product and service innovation in AI, data analytics, autonomous networks and cloud native IT. All entries were assessed by a global panel of judges based on the extensive materials submitted. Each year, the judging panels are carefully selected from varied global organisations to ensure a balanced approach and a wholly impartial view. Commenting on the double wins, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, "This is certainly a welcomed surprise and a proud moment for us at TM R&D. SWIMS is an Internet of Water (IoW) solution, essentially doing for water what Internet of Things (IoT) does for various other industries and verticals. These include electric utilities, transportation, smart cities and factory automation, to enable in-depth, new insights into the operations and the right tools to act on those insights. "SWIMS offers end-to-end smart water management that improves non-revenue water management. It optimises the repair and replacement of ageing water infrastructure as well as improves response to weather events such as water level and quality. Based on feedback we received from Air Selangor, with SWIMS, water usage visibility improved by 3,000% and meter reading accuracy improved 10-15% through automation," shared Dr. Sharlene. The TM Forum Excellence Awards also recognises another solution from TM R&D, IDEAS+ which is a one-stop advisory platform deployed at TM's contact centre. Using machine-learning algorithm, IDEAS+ assists the call centre agents to efficiently troubleshoot and resolve various customer issues. The objectives of the project were to reduce Average Handling Time (AHT) at the contact centre when entertaining customer calls, reduce repeated truck roll, increase the accuracy of troubleshooting and escalation as well as to achieve cost-saving. IDEAS+ is an intelligent diagnostic and advisory system for TM contact centre agents to provide predictive guideline as well as troubleshooting steps with more than 95% accuracy. Established in 2001, TM R&D is the centre of innovation for TM Group focusing on innovations that enriches humanity and bring progress to nations. Yayasan TM hands over 60 refurbished laptops under #MYBAIKHATI to aid underprivileged students with online learning
YTM collaborated with PINTAR Foundation to contribute 60 refurbished laptops to underprivileged students under Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Bangsar/Pudu (PPDBP) to facilitate their online learning session. In its continuous effort to ease the burden of underprivileged students during this unprecedented period, Yayasan TM (YTM), the foundation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), together with PINTAR Foundation has reached out to the beneficiaries group under the #MYBAIKHATI initiative. Through the collaboration, YTM contributed 60 units of refurbished laptops together with 15GB LTE unifi Mobile #BEBAS packages FREE for one (1) year to Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Bangsar/Pudu (PPDBP), Kuala Lumpur. Eligible students from 16 primary and secondary schools have been identified by PPDBP to receive the contribution. When handing over the contribution, Izlyn Ramli, Director of YTM said: “We understand the critical need of good, workable devices and internet connection for Home-Based Learning and Teaching (PdPR) sessions in the new norm. Under the #MYBAIKHATI initiative, we have refurbished used laptops that we received from the kind and caring public. Coupled with our unifi Mobile #BEBAS data plan, we hope the identified students can have a better PdPR experience. TM through YTM will continue to pave the way for deserving students to have greater access to education as we believe no one should be left behind, especially in this digital age.” Meanwhile commenting on this contribution, Tuan Hj Azuar Hj Hussin, Bangsar/Pudu District Education Officer said: "PPDBP would like to express our deepest appreciation to YTM and PINTAR Foundation. We believe this contribution would be invaluable to the recipients and facilitate their learning process in this very challenging period. We hope more corporates will come forth and provide their support to fulfil the needs of these underprivileged students.” TM is supporting the #MYBAIKHATI initiative, an industry-wide device crowdsourcing initiative aimed to collect and repair used communication devices to be distributed to low-income families (B40). TM has set up six (6) of its TMpoint outlets in the Klang Valley as collection points to facilitate the donation drive. The outlets are TM Experience Centre (TMEC) at Menara TM, Bangsar; TMpoint Cyberjaya, TMpoint Shah Alam, TMpoint Setapak, TMpoint Bukit Raja and TMpoint Taman Desa. To further encourage the public to donate their used smart devices, TM has partnered with realme, a smartphone manufacturer, where realme has allocated 300 realme vouchers worth RM50 each for individuals who contribute their used devices. They can then use the vouchers to purchase any realme devices at realme Official Store on Shopee. "realme Malaysia is pleased to join forces with TM in encouraging Malaysians to donate their used smart devices. We also hope that realme fans with old but usable devices can donate them to support a good cause during this challenging time," said Tiffany Teh, Brand Director of realme Malaysia. TM Global Expands Network Infrastructure To Boost High-Speed Connectivity For Sabah And Sarawak
KUALA LUMPUR, 30 October 2023 – TM Global, the wholesale domestic and international business arm of TM, today announced the successful deployment of two additional International Internet Gateways (IGW) in Sabah and Sarawak. These IGWs will serve as crucial hubs for international Internet traffic exchange, reflecting the business’ commitment to continuously expand its local network infrastructure and offer high-speed Internet connectivity in East Malaysia. This network expansion will enable TM’s customers in East Malaysia and the neighbouring region to access global internet traffic via the most efficient route. By reducing the need to route traffic back to West Malaysia, these IGWs will significantly enhance connectivity speed and reliability for businesses, service providers and their end-customers. The two IGWs are located in Penampang (Sabah) and Stampin (Sarawak), strengthening TM Global’s existing Internet Exchange (IX) nodes across Sabah and Sarawak. The existing nodes in Sabah are in Kota Kinabalu, Inanam, Elopura, Menggatal and Putatan. Meanwhile, in Sarawak the nodes are in Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Petra Jaya, Kuala Baram and Tabuan Jaya. Commenting on the initiative, Khairul Liza Ibrahim, TM Global’s Executive Vice President said, “As a strategic partner to enable Malaysia’s digital agenda, the deployment of these new IGWs reinforces our mission to connect Malaysia globally. “More importantly, these IGWs help bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak, benefitting densely populated areas and enhancing Internet coverage for communities in smaller towns and remote locations.
