TM R&D Celebrates double win at the global TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020
In-house solutions SWIMS and IDEAS+ received global recognition for the Beyond Connectivity and A.I, Data & Analytics categories respectively
Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), added another feather to its cap when they recently bagged not one, but two (2) awards at the prestigious TM Forum Excellence Awards 2020.
The awards were conferred to TM R&D for its innovative solutions namely Smart Water Integrated Management System (SWIMS) under the Beyond Connectivity and Artificial Intelligence (A.I) category, while its Intelligent Network Diagnostic & Expert Advisory System for Service Desk (IDEAS+) solution received the recognition under Data & Analytics category.
Since 2007, TM Forum Excellence Awards recognises the world's leading companies for their innovative achievements spanning digital transformation, business and IT agility, customer centricity, cultural transformation, cross-industry partnering and collaboration, and product and service innovation in AI, data analytics, autonomous networks and cloud native IT. All entries were assessed by a global panel of judges based on the extensive materials submitted. Each year, the judging panels are carefully selected from varied global organisations to ensure a balanced approach and a wholly impartial view.
Commenting on the double wins, Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer, TM R&D said, "This is certainly a welcomed surprise and a proud moment for us at TM R&D. We are excited that two of our very own internally-developed smart solutions, deployed in collaboration with Air Selangor and Group Customer Experience at TM have been recognised by global industry experts such as TM Forum. Both solutions are now commercially available domestically and to the global market. We believe TM R&D is on the right track to support TM's Digital Malaysia aspirations and simultaneously accelerate Malaysia to become a digital nation."
SWIMS is an Internet of Water (IoW) solution, essentially doing for water what Internet of Things (IoT) does for various other industries and verticals. These include electric utilities, transportation, smart cities and factory automation, to enable in-depth, new insights into the operations and the right tools to act on those insights.
"SWIMS offers end-to-end smart water management that improves non-revenue water management. It optimises the repair and replacement of ageing water infrastructure as well as improves response to weather events such as water level and quality. Based on feedback we received from Air Selangor, with SWIMS, water usage visibility improved by 3,000% and meter reading accuracy improved 10-15% through automation," shared Dr. Sharlene.
The TM Forum Excellence Awards also recognises another solution from TM R&D, IDEAS+ which is a one-stop advisory platform deployed at TM's contact centre. Using machine-learning algorithm, IDEAS+ assists the call centre agents to efficiently troubleshoot and resolve various customer issues. The objectives of the project were to reduce Average Handling Time (AHT) at the contact centre when entertaining customer calls, reduce repeated truck roll, increase the accuracy of troubleshooting and escalation as well as to achieve cost-saving. IDEAS+ is an intelligent diagnostic and advisory system for TM contact centre agents to provide predictive guideline as well as troubleshooting steps with more than 95% accuracy.

TM One-UC Tati collaboration to enhance Terengganu’s tech research and development; enables education equity for students in the state
The Master Services Agreement (MSA) between TM & UC TATI will enable the digital transformation initiatives of this state government university college TM One, the enterprise and public sector business solutions arm of Telekom Malaysia (TM), has signed a Master Services Agreement (MSA) with University College Terengganu Advanced Technical Institute (UC TATI) to provide high speed managed data and Internet services at its Teluk Kalong Kemaman Campus and Kuala Terengganu City Campus respectively, for the benefit and use by the students, lecturers and staff. The partnership, which includes a complete end-to-end package of both Wide Area Network and Local Area Network effectively enables wireless connectivity throughout the campuses, and is part of the Terengganu-based institution's efforts to enhance its digital research and development field, as well as delighting student experiences post pandemic. In particular, TM One’s high-speed Internet services will support the Terengganu Big Data Institute (BDIT) located at UC TATI to conduct research and activities related to public data for the university college and the Terengganu State Government. With this, TM One enables UC TATI to explore new digital technologies such as Cloud-Based Services, Public Data and Disaster Recovery Centres that will enhance student learning as well as potentially serve the local Government and surrounding communities. General Manager of State Sales for TM One, Jamalullail Mohd said, “This agreement symbolises the strong partnership between TM One and UC TATI to provide next gen connectivity services for more contextual teaching and learning experiences to students. The accelerated adoption of digitisation has impacted the lives of Malaysians everywhere, with access to fast and reliable Internet services becoming a necessity in households, workplaces and learning institutions. TM Inks MOU With ZTE For R&D Innovation Under Latest Strategic Partnership Programme
TM, Malaysia’s leading converged telco and technology company, has today entered into a MoU with ZTE Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE), a global leader in information and communication technology solutions, to collaborate on a range of research and development innovations under its latest strategic partnership programme. The partnership will leverage TM and ZTE’s joint expertise to drive innovation and digital transformation for customers and industries, focusing on R&D opportunities and commercialisation, product and technology improvement, and the enhancement of TM’s digital talent ecosystem. The collaboration will also serve as an important step towards strengthening the nation’s digital and telco infrastructure, and empower Malaysia’s competitive edge in delivering cutting-edge solutions to the marketplace. Slated to run for a period of three years, the MoU was presided over by YB Fahmi Fadzil, Minister for Communications and Digital; YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister for Communications and Digital; Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Bin Fateh Din, Chairman; and Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus, Chief Operating Officer for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission respectively. The MOU was signed by TM’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Imri Mokhtar and ZTE’s Managing Director, Mr. Steven Ge. TM collaborates with 14 financial institutions to establish Vendor Financing Programme
PERINTIS Launched to Empower Local SME Vendors; Boost Growth of Businesses Towards Ensuring Sustainability PERINTIS to provide comprehensive and flexible financing facility as well as consultation for TM local SME vendors TM committed to strengthen its vendor ecosystem and accelerate vendor transformation through continuous upskilling and development programmes TM continues to support and develop local entrepreneurs especially in the new and emerging economy supporting Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) towards ensuring their sustainability and growth As part of its nation building effort towards ensuring the sustainability of local vendors, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announced its collaboration with selected financial institutions to embark on a TM Vendor Financing Programme called "PERINTIS". The programme will see the involvement of 14 financial institutions providing financing facilities and consultations for TM local SME vendors. The institutions are Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, Maybank Islamic Berhad, CIMB Bank Berhad, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, RHB Islamic Bank Berhad, United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, Small Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia Berhad, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad, Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad, PMB Tijari Berhad, Bay Group Holdings Sdn Bhd, Commerze Capital Sdn Bhd and El-Nuwr Capital Sdn Bhd. To signify the collaboration for the PERINTIS programme, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between TM and all the 14 institutions. Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM signed the MoU on behalf of TM while the participating financial institutions were represented by their respective heads. The signing ceremony was witnessed by YB Dato' Sri Dr. Hj. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, accompanied by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, Chairman of TM. Also present at the event were Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Mentek, Secretary General of the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives and his Deputy, Datuk Haji Zamri Salleh, Deputy Secretary General of Entrepreneur Development. Commenting on the collaboration, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakke said: "TM is committed to continuously strengthen our vendor ecosystem through upskilling and development programmes. The programmes are aimed at boosting the growth of the vendors towards ensuring their sustainability, while at the same time upholding integrity in all activities undertaken. This PERINTIS programme was initiated to provide TM's local SME vendors with flexible financial support and convenience towards enhancing their capabilities and viability. It is also in line with the Government's efforts to promote vendors' business viability and to create employment opportunities in the country." "Our vendors are our strategic business partners and they play a pivotal role in our business operations. With their undivided support, TM is on the right path to deliver more innovative digital products and solutions to all our customers; preparing them with the right foundation for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0)," he added. PERINTIS: Providing comprehensive and flexible financing facilities towards building the capacity and capability of its vendors The PERINTIS programme will provide TM vendors with added convenience through various financing facilities and financial advisory. Under this programme, TM vendors will enjoy comprehensive financing packages across all levels and sizes of business including those with sub-contractors; with the value of up to RM10 million, depending on the number of contracts obtained from TM. The offering will start from the stage of preparation of equipment and requirements to obtain a contract from TM. The disbursement processes will also be expedited to ensure that the vendors are viable and are able to support the business. In addition, the programme offers accelerated loan approval, made possible through a cooperation between the financial institutions and a credit guarantor which acts as a guarantor based on the Risk Acceptance Criteria and Eligibility Criteria agreed with the participating financial institutions. Being at the frontier of each telecommunication technology evolution of the nation, TM remains steadfast to support and develop local entrepreneurs, particularly Bumiputera vendors to accelerate the Digital Malaysia's aspirations.
