TM to accelerate fibre deployment in Sabah, targeting 58% state coverage by 2025
Building on its commitment to support the Sabah Maju Jaya aspiration, TM will accelerate its fibre deployment, targeting a minimum of 145,000 premises to be connected in the next three (3) years from 2022 – 2025, achieving 58% of fibre coverage in the state.
These targets, along with other matters, were shared during an engagement initiative by TM’s leadership with the Chief Minister of Sabah, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor today, in an effort to foster a stronger relationship with the state government and various stakeholder groups in Sabah.
The delegation, led by Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM shared updates on TM’s activities in the state as part of its effort to bring seamless connectivity and digital solutions to the population, business community, industry and the public sector. TM has invested more than RM1.1 billion in CAPEX in Sabah since 2012 towards improving connectivity and fiberisation in the state. With a total of 32,000km fibre optic cables statewide, TM has connected close to 282,000 premises in Sabah, in addition to the rollout of 59 fibre connectivity sites at schools in the state which serve as Points Of Presence (POPs). Cumulatively, TM has deployed over 600,000km fibre optic cables nationwide, and will continue to expand in line with the implementation of JENDELA.
Also shared during the visit were TM’s various initiatives to improve browsing experience of customers in Sabah. To enable faster content downloading and reduced latency, TM deployed the TM internet exchange (TMiX) nodes locally in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang as well as upcoming ones in Inanam, Kinarut, Menggatal and Putatan, expected to be ready by December 2022. The company will also enable content localisation, where OTT players can place their content servers in Penampang, establish a Content Delivery Network (CDN) node and implement an International Gateway (IGW) in the district by Q1 2023.
“As a human-centred technology company, TM is ready to play the role of a strategic partner in realising Sabah’s digital agenda in multiple ways, including developing competitive and competent digital talents for Sabah’s Digital Economy through scholarships, education collaboration with MMU as well as job opportunities,” said Imri.
TM is also ready to collaborate and offer comprehensive custom digital solutions to Sabah’s public sector and business community, with Digital Government, Digital Marketplace, unifi Business Club as well as its comprehensive Cloud, Data Centre and Cybersecurity offerings, in addition to its suite of Smart City solutions.

Winning this prestigious award places TM R&D as the champion of Research & Development in 2018. In addition, TM R&D has been selected to represent Malaysia in the Cross Category: Research & Development at the International APICTA Awards 2018 in Guangzhou, China. Present to accept the award was Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, Chief Executive Officer of TM R&D. Developed by TM R&D, Smart Safety Helmet is a data driven smart industrial or safety helmet, an Internet of Things (IoT) solution that provides live, wireless monitoring and array of sensors including accident impact and geolocation which can be used to perform various analysis towards creating a safer worksite. It sends telemetry to the cloud and processes the data for the benefit of the employer as well as the staff. It has all the safety helmet features, location tracking services, attendance, violation detection and a video camera for remote coaching and emergency observation of the workforce. This Smart Safety Helmet innovation is the first Smart Safety Helmet in Malaysia and it is now ready to be deployed for industry players across various sectors such as Oil & Gas, Construction, Chemical & Manufacturing Industry and many more. TM supports 5G deployment in Langkawi with its Integrated Operations Command Centre
Deployed the Region’s First Stand Alone (SA) Dedicated 5G network Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is fully supportive of the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) currently undertaken by Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The Company has already embarked on a total of 11 use cases in Langkawi and deployed the operations of an Integrated Operations Command Centre (IOCC) which is at the heart of 5G implementation in Langkawi. The IOCC, or also known as 5G Command Centre (5GCC), which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, is an integrated command centre where the data feed and dashboard monitoring of TM 5G network and use cases in Langkawi are centralised. This 5GDP is recording a number of firsts for TM and the country: The first Telco to deploy SA dedicated 5G network in the country and in the region. The first telco in the region to update our Radio Access Network (RAN) and devices with SA dedicated 5G network. The first Telco in the country to achieve 1.5Gbps for 5G speed tests conducted within its 5G use cases sites. Langkawi is the first Smart Tourism Island in the world equipped with 5G Dato’ Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said: “We fully support MCMC’s 5GDP and we are currently testing the implementation of a converged 5G core network which allows co-existence of Non-Stand Alone (NSA) (5G enabled on current 4G network) and Stand Alone (SA) dedicated 5G network in Langkawi. SA is the future of the 5G network deployment and this demonstration is crucial to fast track 5G implementation in the country. With the implementation of the SA network in Langkawi for the 5GDP, TM is the first Telco that has deployed the first SA dedicated 5G network in the country and in the region. We are also proud to note that 5G speed tests conducted within TM’s 5G use cases sites have achieved up to 1.5Gbps. I’m also pleased to update that TM is the first telco in the region to update our Radio Access Network (RAN) and devices with SA dedicated 5G network.” “For 5GDP in Langkawi, we have deployed the highest number of 5G use cases among the participating telcos and all the 5G network and use cases sites can be monitored via the dashboard at the 5GCC, where our expert, qualified technical team works 24/7 to monitor the operations. It is also linked to the local authorities and emergency response services which allow for the communities as well as tourists to experience a smarter, safer living. In addition, we open the 5GCC for all other Service Providers to deploy their monitoring dashboards so all relevant data can be centralised for collective insights.” Currently, the 5GCC houses the dashboard for the following use cases: Smart Traffic Light Smart Parking Smart Safety and Security Solutions Langkawi Smart Tourism Dashboard (Smart Tourism App and UNESCO 8K VR) Gerbang Langkawi Platform (for Smart Water Management System, Smart Vehicle System, Smart Retail Analytics, Smart Safety Helmet and Geolocation People Safety Solutions) Backed up by analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and data-driven insights, the 5GCC is furnished with advanced integrated security features to serve as a security monitoring centre through closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras being installed at hotspots on the island. It is also equipped with face and vehicle recognition system that will assist authorities in public safety and surveillance as well as with criminal investigation, crime prevention and citizen protection. It also monitors weather sensors, tsunami alarms, wind speed systems that have been installed at TM’s designated 5G use cases sites in Kuah and Cenang. The control centre empowers local agencies in promoting tourism safety and attractions effectively, unravelling businesses growth opportunities for the local and providing a safer and smarter crowd control for tourists that will help drive forward Langkawi as a Smart Tourism Island. The monitoring dashboards provides real-time data and consolidated information from all the use cases, for example traffic, parking and security conditions of the 5G use cases areas in Kuah and Pantai Cenang, water consumption level, retail footfall and customer emotions data, number of incidents and alerts, among others. In addition, the authorities can receive alerts and notifications, such as distress calls and response via a panic button from the closed circuit television (CCTV) poles deployed with the smart safety and security solution, or alerts during emergencies e.g. accidents at the workplace, missing individuals, detection of unhappy customers at retail outlets and detection of dangerous driving. These alerts enable the authorities to mobilise resources swiftly during any undesirable incidents or emergency situations, thereby improving their ability to react and respond to the Rakyat's needs in a timely manner for any emergencies. “As the national telecommunications infrastructure provider of Malaysia’s Digital Nation aspirations, we are honoured to be given the opportunity to establish this 5GCC which demonstrates our expertise and capabilities in delivering 5G services to Malaysians nationwide. TM collaborates with 14 financial institutions to establish Vendor Financing Programme
PERINTIS Launched to Empower Local SME Vendors; Boost Growth of Businesses Towards Ensuring Sustainability PERINTIS to provide comprehensive and flexible financing facility as well as consultation for TM local SME vendors TM committed to strengthen its vendor ecosystem and accelerate vendor transformation through continuous upskilling and development programmes TM continues to support and develop local entrepreneurs especially in the new and emerging economy supporting Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) towards ensuring their sustainability and growth As part of its nation building effort towards ensuring the sustainability of local vendors, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announced its collaboration with selected financial institutions to embark on a TM Vendor Financing Programme called "PERINTIS". The programme will see the involvement of 14 financial institutions providing financing facilities and consultations for TM local SME vendors. The institutions are Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, Maybank Islamic Berhad, CIMB Bank Berhad, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, RHB Islamic Bank Berhad, United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, Small Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia Berhad, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad, Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad, PMB Tijari Berhad, Bay Group Holdings Sdn Bhd, Commerze Capital Sdn Bhd and El-Nuwr Capital Sdn Bhd. To signify the collaboration for the PERINTIS programme, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between TM and all the 14 institutions. Imri Mokhtar, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM signed the MoU on behalf of TM while the participating financial institutions were represented by their respective heads. The signing ceremony was witnessed by YB Dato' Sri Dr. Hj. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, accompanied by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, Chairman of TM. Also present at the event were Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Mentek, Secretary General of the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives and his Deputy, Datuk Haji Zamri Salleh, Deputy Secretary General of Entrepreneur Development. Commenting on the collaboration, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakke said: "TM is committed to continuously strengthen our vendor ecosystem through upskilling and development programmes. The programmes are aimed at boosting the growth of the vendors towards ensuring their sustainability, while at the same time upholding integrity in all activities undertaken. This PERINTIS programme was initiated to provide TM's local SME vendors with flexible financial support and convenience towards enhancing their capabilities and viability. It is also in line with the Government's efforts to promote vendors' business viability and to create employment opportunities in the country." "Our vendors are our strategic business partners and they play a pivotal role in our business operations. With their undivided support, TM is on the right path to deliver more innovative digital products and solutions to all our customers; preparing them with the right foundation for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0)," he added. PERINTIS: Providing comprehensive and flexible financing facilities towards building the capacity and capability of its vendors The PERINTIS programme will provide TM vendors with added convenience through various financing facilities and financial advisory. Under this programme, TM vendors will enjoy comprehensive financing packages across all levels and sizes of business including those with sub-contractors; with the value of up to RM10 million, depending on the number of contracts obtained from TM. The offering will start from the stage of preparation of equipment and requirements to obtain a contract from TM. The disbursement processes will also be expedited to ensure that the vendors are viable and are able to support the business. In addition, the programme offers accelerated loan approval, made possible through a cooperation between the financial institutions and a credit guarantor which acts as a guarantor based on the Risk Acceptance Criteria and Eligibility Criteria agreed with the participating financial institutions. Being at the frontier of each telecommunication technology evolution of the nation, TM remains steadfast to support and develop local entrepreneurs, particularly Bumiputera vendors to accelerate the Digital Malaysia's aspirations.
