Aimed at improving customer experience directly, unifi gathers ideas from the best talents through its first-ever Hackathon

unifi, the premier Convergence brand under Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), stays true to its #khabarbaik spirit, organised its first ever hackathon to tap into the young creative talents to create brilliant ideas to resolve pain points and enhance the service experience of unifi customers. The 24-hour, non-stop hackathon challenge was successfully organised at Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya recently with over 110 local and foreign talented students from 13 public as well as private universities nationwide.

Harnessing creative brains to create innovative solutions for unifi

unifi’s call for creative genius among the university students in this hackathon received participation from a total of 27 teams from various local universities. The participants were in groups of three (3) to five (5) members with different backgrounds of expertise from coders, hackers to designers came together to pit against each other and build innovative and practical digital solutions within 24 hours. The teams were tasked to ideate and develop innovative digital solutions, which can be adopted and implemented by unifi.

Moharmustaqeem Mohammed, Acting Executive Vice President, unifi, attended the event and spent time getting to know the participants closer. He also shared his experience and aspirations for the event when he commented, “As an integrated telco and the enabler of Malaysia’s digital aspirations, unifi is always listening and looking for ways to improve our services and processes so we can serve Malaysians better. We are committed to bringing #khabarbaik to address our customers’ pain points and what better way to do so than through the best young talents who are also our customers. With that, we can create and adopt new solutions to meet their needs better. It perfectly fits TM’s brand promise, “Life Made Easier”. We are committed to deploying the ideas from the winning teams, hence, the winners are rewarded with an exclusive opportunity to work with the unifi digital team, so we could together, roll out the solutions quickly to the market.”

Ten (10) winning projects were shortlisted to demonstrate their presentation to the panel of judges and after gruelling coding exercise and much anticipation from the participating teams, top three (3) teams were selected as grand winners. The judging was based on their abilities to build exciting digital solutions aimed at enhancing unifi customer experience. The key winning factors include innovation, originality and design whilst measuring the technical ability of each team. 

The 3 Grand Winners for unifi Hackathon 2019 after much deliberation were Fast Data team from Asia Pacific University; Green Phoenix team from University of Malaya and Taylor’s University; and RGB team from University of Malaya. Each of the winning team took home a cash prize of RM10,000 and an opportunity to incubate with unifi team to deploy their solutions to solve real-unifi challenges.

TM expands its unifi service to more areas in Kuching

Residents of three (3) more villages in Kuching namely Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Surabaya can now enjoy high speed Internet connectivity with unifi. Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through TM Sarawak, today expanded its unifi service to three (3) more villages in Kuching, Sarawak namely Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Surabaya (Kpg BGS). The service expansion has provided an opportunity for new and existing TM customers in the area to experience high-speed Internet connectivity delivered via fibre optic network. To mark the occasion, a special event titled “Juh Tukar Ke unifi @ Tebingan Sungai BGS” was held and launched by YB Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman Haji Junaidi, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs & Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU)) and Assistant Minister of Utility (Water Supply). The launch was witnessed by Adiman Ajem, Director of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak and Sudarnoto Osman, Chief Executive Officer, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC). Also present at the event was Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff, State General Manager, TM Sarawak. Speaking at the event, YB Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman said: “We welcome the expansion of unifi to Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Surabaya as this signifies TM’s continuous effort to bring high speed broadband connectivity to more areas in Sarawak. This initiative is hoped to boost the growth of local industries such as Kek Lapis Sarawak and Ikan Terubuk Masin, thus promoting digital economy and adoption of a more digital lifestyle amongst the local communities. As Malaysia’s national telecommunications services provider, with its extensive network and expertise, I believe TM is more than capable to facilitate Sarawak’s digital transformation journey.” Meanwhile in his speech, Jafer Sadig said, “As the enabler of Digital Malaysia aspiration, we are excited to deliver our unifi service to Kpg BGS so the residents there can fully utilise the high speed connectivity to cater to their digital lifestyle. We will also continue to upgrade the network infrastructure to fibre optic beyond Kpg BGS in Kuching Division to fulfill the increasing demand for unifi. This has become more essential as the nation adapts to the new normal in which our activities including work, education, business and leisure have been digitalised. WeTV enters into partnership with unifi TV
